Diogo Paulo

Diogo Paulo is an extremely diligent and motivated student. In 2023, he graduated from the University of Beira Interior (UBI) with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, having achieved an average final grade of 17/20. His undergraduate project resulted in a published conference paper on CIARP, reflecting his research skills from an early stage.

Diogo is in the final year of his master's degree in computer science at UBI, having an average grade of 18/20. His Master's thesis, "Detection of Bin Overflow or Parasitic Waste on Streets," is supervised by Professor João Neves and focuses on themes of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Vision, i.e., pattern recognition, object segmentation, and detection. Diogo actively participates in research as a research fellow, reflecting a high commitment to the field. He is currently working on a research project, an agreement between Evox Technologies and his institution, where his activity contributes directly to his thesis research. This is his second research fellowship position, demonstrating a strong commitment to the field.

Diogo also has experience presenting his work orally and has participated in programming contests like MIUP. In order to support his technical skills, Diogo has completed Andrew Ng's extensive Deep Learning Specialization on Coursera. InovFarmer.MED Project

InovFarmer.MED

A PRIMA initiative focused on increasing the resilience of small-scale farms in the Mediterranean region through adapted technologies and smart agri-food supply chains.

Role: First Stage Researcher (Fellowship) focused on the development of a fruit ripeness detection system (using AI) that could be used in the field using a mobile application.

Evox Technologies Project

Evox Technologies

Research project in collaboration with Evox Technologies to develop an AI-based system for detecting and segmenting overflowing waste from containers in urban environments.

Role: Research Fellow working on the development of deep learning models for waste detection and segmentation using computer vision techniques. This project directly contributes to my Master's thesis research on "Detection of Bin Overflow or Parasitic Waste on Streets."

InovFarmer.MED

The InovFarmer.MED proposal focus on PRIMA's Thematic Area 3 – Sustainable Mediterranean agro-food value chain for regional and local development, addressing specifically the topic 2.3.1 "Increasing the resilience of smallscale farms to global challenges and COVID-like crisis by using adapted technologies, smart agri-food supply chain and crisis management tools".

Knowing that environmental and social changes are deeply affecting Euro Mediterranean agro-food systems, and that COVID-19 outbreak imposing restrictions on movement, has demonstrated the fragility of the Mediterranean food systems, already distressed by climate change, population growth and scarcity of resources, the InovFarmer.MED consortium has developed a empowerment strategy addressing vulnerabilities of the producers in particular, smallholder farmers, to establish lines of resilience to face these challenges.

InovFarmer.MED will address, as case-study, the value-chains of two traditional agrifood products with high potential economic relevance and social significance for small-scale farmers of Mediterranean basin: fig (Ficus carica) and prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica).

Evox Technologies - AI for Waste Detection

This research project is a collaboration between University of Beira Interior and Evox Technologies, where I'm working as a research fellow under a scholarship program. The main goal is to develop an advanced AI system capable of detecting and segmenting overflowing waste from containers in urban environments.

The project involves:

  • Development of deep learning models for waste object detection and segmentation
  • Creation of custom datasets for training and validation
  • Implementation of computer vision algorithms for real-time analysis
  • Integration with existing waste management systems

This work directly contributes to my Master's thesis research on "Detection of Bin Overflow or Parasitic Waste on Streets," supervised by Professor João Neves, combining academic research with practical industry applications in smart city development.
